Now, as for shipping containers, these excite me for so many reasons. So, creating more space externally let’s me feel more free and take up less of a footprint, and ADU’s have grown on me as a more welcome option to living than that of a two story house. If i find that a possession doesn’t have a useful quality, I tend to get rid of it, not only freeing up space externally but internally as well. I think more and more we are starting to figure out that we need less “stuff” and space than we believe.įor myself I am starting to take a mental inventory of the possessions I have and what they actually mean to me. Minimalism is starting to become a more popular frame of mind and approach to living and an ADU certainly fits right in to culture. To me I see that an ADU Not only alleviates the pressures of a quickly growing population, lack of housing and small lots, it’s also a lifestyle choice.

And how? I think I'll be following this trend and hopefully can keep updated on it. I have noticed that some of my new west coast friends are all obsessed with the "shipping container" homes. A few examples: ADU's can be extra revenue as a yearly rental/vacation rental, ADU's can be made into in-law suites, or ADU's become a home office/workspace. I also like the expansiveness and creativity behind ADU's. Personally, I enjoy watching the "Tiny House", "Tree House", "She-shed" shows and like how all those concepts sort of fall into the ADU category. I have a feeling that population, culture, and innovation have a lot to do with this growing idea out here. Builders I've interviewed with and met socially have told me they actually market themselves as specialists in ADU (Accessory Dwelling Units) production. Heres to a big trend I've noticed on the West coast that is much more apparent than the East.
